OpenAI Launches $10 Billion DeployCo and Acquires Tomoro to Fuel Enterprise AI Transformation

OpenAI has launched DeployCo, a $10B joint venture backed by over $4B, and acquired Tomoro to accelerate enterprise AI adoption.

On May 11, 2026, OpenAI officially launched the OpenAI Deployment Company (DeployCo), a massive new joint venture backed by over $4 billion in initial external investment. Designed to help major corporations integrate artificial intelligence directly into their production workflows, the venture marks a significant transition for OpenAI from a raw model provider to an active enterprise transformation partner. Concurrently, OpenAI announced an agreement to acquire Tomoro, an applied AI consulting and engineering firm, to supply the specialized talent needed to scale this ambitious operational model.

A Massive Financial Coalition

DeployCo launches with a pre-money valuation of $10 billion, with OpenAI retaining majority ownership and control of the entity. OpenAI itself is committing up to $1.5 billion to the venture, starting with an initial $500 million in equity and an option to invest a further $1 billion.

The remaining capital comes from a committed partnership involving 19 of the world's leading investment firms, consultancies, and system integrators. TPG is leading the investment partnership, with Advent, Bain Capital, and Brookfield serving as co-lead founding partners. Other prominent founding partners include B Capital, BBVA, Emergence Capital, Goanna, Goldman Sachs, SoftBank Corp., Warburg Pincus, and WCAS. To guarantee active integration support, consulting and systems integration giants Bain & Company, Capgemini, and McKinsey & Company have also invested. In a highly unusual financial structure, investors in DeployCo are guaranteed a 17.5% annual return over a five-year period. The entire venture is being led by OpenAI's Chief Operating Officer, Brad Lightcap.

Acquiring Tomoro for Forward Deployed Engineering

Central to DeployCo's operational strategy is the acquisition of Tomoro, an applied AI consulting and engineering firm founded in 2023. Subject to customary closing conditions and regulatory approvals, the acquisition is expected to close in the coming months.

The acquisition of Tomoro will bring approximately 150 experienced Forward Deployed Engineers (FDEs) and Deployment Specialists directly into the DeployCo fold. Founded on a close alliance with OpenAI, Tomoro has built an elite reputation by deploying custom AI solutions for major global brands, including Tesco, Virgin Atlantic, Supercell, Mattel, Red Bull, Fidelity International, and the NBA.

In an announcement accompanying the acquisition, Tomoro representatives stated that their shared goal is to help organizations transition from simple access to OpenAI products to real, production-ready deployments, establishing deeply integrated AI and reimagined corporate workflows.

Bridging the Enterprise Operational Gap

DeployCo's primary mission is to help organizations bridge the persistent gap between experimental AI pilots and deep, scalable business integration. Many corporate buyers face hurdles ranging from internal talent shortages and workflow redesign to regulatory compliance, model governance, and cybersecurity.

To solve this, DeployCo is adopting an FDE model—a hands-on implementation strategy popularized by data analytics firm Palantir. This model embeds specialized software engineers directly within client organizations to build custom solutions and redesign workflows around AI capabilities.

Denise Dresser, Chief Revenue Officer at OpenAI, emphasized the necessity of this hands-on approach: "AI is becoming capable of doing increasingly meaningful work inside organizations. The challenge now is helping companies integrate these systems into the infrastructure and workflows that power their businesses. DeployCo is designed to help organizations bridge that gap and turn AI capability into real operational impact."

OpenAI noted in an official blog post that the company was founded as a research and deployment company, stating that building powerful AI models is only part of the work, and that true impact comes from helping people and organizations use those systems safely, effectively, and at scale.

According to unconfirmed reports, enterprise customers already contribute significantly to OpenAI's overall revenue, potentially accounting for up to 40% of its total intake. Unverified strategic plans also suggest that OpenAI intends to systematically deploy its technologies across the vast portfolio companies of its private equity backers, creating an immediate, built-in distribution network.

A Transforming Market Landscape

The launch of DeployCo immediately places OpenAI in direct competition with traditional enterprise consulting giants like Accenture and Deloitte. Ironically, it also positions OpenAI as both a partner and competitor to some of its own investors, such as McKinsey and Bain & Company.

The urgency of OpenAI's move was highlighted by a flurry of activity across the sector on the very same day. On May 11, 2026, OpenAI's primary rival Anthropic announced its own $1.5 billion enterprise deployment joint venture backed by Blackstone, Hellman & Friedman, and Goldman Sachs. This was quickly followed by Anthropic establishing deep alliances with PwC and KPMG later in the month, while EY announced an expanded partnership with Microsoft.

As model developers build out their own specialized services arms, the enterprise software market is entering a new era. For corporate buyers, DeployCo promises unmatched access to OpenAI's cutting-edge systems and custom engineering. However, it also introduces strategic questions around potential vendor lock-in, prompting CIOs to carefully balance deeply integrated single-vendor ecosystems against flexible, multi-vendor AI strategies.
